Chess Tactics: Discovered Attack & Check

Discovered Attack — The Art of Hidden Batteries

A discovered attack is a highly sophisticated tactical motif that occurs when one of your pieces moves away, clearing the line of sight for another of your long-range pieces (bishop, rook, or queen) to strike a target. The lethal efficiency of a discovered attack is that it unleashes two simultaneous threats: one from the moving piece and another from the newly opened attacker.

When the newly opened attack targets the enemy king, it is called a 'discovered check.' Discovered checks are incredibly forcing because the opponent must respond to the check immediately, allowing your moving piece to capture almost any undefended high-value target on the board. Practicing these puzzles builds deep tactical awareness.

Tips for Unleashing Discovered Attacks

  • Set Up X-Ray Batteries: Position your rooks and bishops on lines that intersect with enemy royalty, even if currently blocked.
  • Make Forcing Escapes: Ensure the moving piece creates a high-priority threat, such as attacking a queen or capturing material.
  • Master Double Check: If the moving piece also checks the king, the defender is forced to move their king, as blocking or capturing is impossible.
  • Create Strategic Traps: Disguise your aligned attackers to lure the opponent into stepping into your line of fire.
